Latisha Johnson is a proud, lifelong Detroiter with an unrivaled appreciation and understanding of the community and needs of its residents. She learned the values of hard work, sacrifice and responsibility growing up as the fifth of eight children to parents with a grade school education and blue collar jobs.
Thanks to the support of her older siblings, Latisha became the first in her family to receive a college degree. She graduated from the University of Michigan - Dearborn with a degree in finance, after changing her major from Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. She began her career in Detroit’s tourism industry, marketing the city for visitors and attracting millions of dollars in spending to the local economy.
Nearly a decade ago, Latisha left her corporate career for public service. She was inspired to work together with neighbors to promote and strengthen their community's assets during one of the most distressed times in Detroit's history. She served tirelessly as a Vice President in East English Village Neighborhood Association. Overcoming blight, holding financial institutions accountable, and preventing resident foreclosures were her main goals.
In 2014, she responded to her community’s need for a strategic vision by founding MECCA Development Corporation. For the past seven years, she has partnered with residents to address concerns of well-being, workforce development, youth engagement, and neighborhood revitalization. Latisha's leadership has lead to the implementation of a community free store that serves 90+ families, skill training for more than 60 neighbors, rehab of two affordable housing units and development of a small nonprofit center.
Latisha has also served as the Treasurer of the 5th Precinct Police-Community Relations Council and member of the Wayne Metro Regional Advisory Council. In 2017, she completed three years on the Detroit Board of Zoning Appeals where she served as Vice Chair and a two-year volunteer commitment with Wayne State University's AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program.
After running a strong race and receiving 42% of the vote in 2017 against an 8-year incumbent, it became evident to Latisha that residents recognize and appreciate her servant leadership. As a result, Latisha Johnson has decided to run for District 4 City Council, again, after realizing the need for someone who understands the issues and is willing to fight for the needs of the people. She intends to focus on what matters most to District 4 residents: quality affordable housing, water affordability, and providing job training programs.
It's time we elect a proven leader working for the betterment of our communities; it's time for a change in leadership. Latisha is ready to fight for you so all residents—not just a privileged few—will have a voice in the changes taking place in our communities. Please support Latisha Johnson for District 4. The honor of serving YOU will always be priority number one.
